Still, Carla Olson, 53, of Oakland, Calif., carried her antique Steinway piano -- a relic of her early career, when she played regularly in New York -- through the airport, put it on the plane and was pleasantly surprised when it didn't break. That's the kind of easygoing know-how you expect from an artist known mostly for jazz -- not plucked from a car -- who fills her current album with a mix of her blues, country, pop and standards. "I wanted to record in my own place," says the musician and daughter of an atheist mother and a Jehovah's Witness father. "I've been recording there for 27 years -- in the same room. So it felt good to get out of that environment." Carrying a piano around is not, however, exactly the main reason Olson was telling fans at the Stonewall Bar in Los Alamos about her new album. Her table was cleared as fast as anyone would expect, and even more so considering the $3,000 price tag for the nearly eight-hour recording session. Olson recorded the album in September 2011 and did a more modest rollout, telling few fans about it. Since then, she's gone on a 50-city tour that's extended to its final date today and has been playing gigs almost daily on weekends. Then, she held a "download only" launch party on Jan. 2 at the Stonewall. "I mean, I didn't know what to expect, but then we had hundreds of people there," says Olson, who started playing in her father's church at age 9 and dropped out of high school in her junior year. "Then we did some radio and TV interviews. And it was like 'Wow, we're having some success here.'" And that success has continued to grow, she says. "I still get letters about it all the time. People that have supported me through all this have been really encouraging. And I was playing at the L.A. Jazz Festival recently, too, which was
